Description

A professional patient care nursing position in the Department of Pediatrics. This position functions as a remote phone triage nurse for the primary care division in the Department of Pediatrics.

Examples of Duties

Patient Care - Triage Nursing 95%

  • Proficient in the ability to utilize SIU phone and computer systems
  • Complies with strict observance of patient confidentiality (HIPPA)
  • Screens telephone calls from patients and families and evaluates the need for the patient to be seen in clinic and/or obtains medical advice from physicians or other members of the health care team.
  • Documents information conveyed by the caller pertinent to the encounter for the medical record. Records date, time, and caller information specific to each encounter, including the caller's name and contact information for follow up.
  • Obtains and documents the patient's medical history information, vital signs, allergies, current medications, and chief complaint in the medical record.
  • Provides health care information to patients and families for treatment of acute and/or episodic minor illnesses according to established protocols.
  • Provides diagnostic study results to patients and families and documents the same.
  • Facilitates orders and medication refills by utilizing the written protocols developed for documentation in the electronic medical record.
  • Returns calls with follow up orders and instructions and other medical advice as directed by the provider(s).
  • Makes ER or Urgent Care referrals for all patients required according to standing triage protocol(s). Coordinates the patient's care by communicating information regarding referrals to the ER and all healthcare professionals involved.
  • Coordinates patient care outside the department with appropriate agencies and other health care facilities, including but not limited to DCFS, Home Health, Public Health Department and WIC, schools and workplaces.
  • Completes paperwork and/or record collection including but not limited to immunization records, required school physical forms, and medication and treatment authorizations for schools and/or child care programs.

Miscellaneous 5%
  • Attends in-services and conferences to expand knowledge, as appropriate
  • Attends meetings and training sessions within the department as assigned
  • Participates in the review, updating, and development of clinical/triage protocols with the Health Care Administrator and division faculty as needed
  • Participates in the training and education of new employees as assigned
  • Participates in patient care audits as assigned
  • Other duties as required, assigned by the administrative team

Qualifications

Licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in IL.

Condition of Employment: Pursuant to the State Universities Civil Service System, an out-of-state resident who is hired into this position must establish Illinois residency within 180 calendar days of their start date.
